Hooding

Hooding Marshals

Every year a group of faculty members is selected to perform the special role of acting as Hooding Marshals at the commencement ceremony. The group is comprised of representatives from the Schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine and the Graduate School. These individuals will greet each graduate from their respective school on stage and place the academic hood upon them during the presentation of candidates and hooding portion of the ceremony. In addition to the hooding marshals, parents and Ph.D. mentors are allowed to perform the hooding role based on the specific criteria outlined below.

Parent and Mentor Hooders

Parent Hooders
The Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine allow parents of graduates who are current faculty members to participate in the ceremony as parent hooders. In order for a parent to present their child with an academic hood during the ceremony, he or she must be a member of the UConn Health faculty. Students are asked to place a request with the Student Affairs and Activities Office in early February. All requests are subject to approval from each of the individual schools. Parents will march in the processional and be seated on stage as members of the platform party. A brief mandatory training session will be held with the Chief Marshal prior to the ceremony. Parent hooders must place an order for regalia with the UConn Health Bookstore.

Mentor Hooders
The Graduate School allows Ph.D. graduates to be hooded by their faculty mentor at the commencement ceremony each year. Graduates should make their mentor aware of the opportunity and invite them to participate in the hooding portion of the ceremony. Mentors who wish to participate should notify the Associate Dean for the Graduate School and the Student Affairs and Activities Office. Those participating will march in the processional and be seated on stage as members of the platform party. A brief mandatory training session will be held with the Chief Marshal prior to the ceremony. Mentor hooders must place an order for regalia with the UConn Health Bookstore.
