No-Cost Treatment for Alcohol and/or Substance Use

UConn Health offers treatment to help youthful individuals who may have a problem with alcohol and/or substances.
- Individuals between the ages of 14-21 may be eligible.
- The study includes two individual and eight group therapy sessions.
- Gift cards up to $250 may be offered as compensation.
What We Are Studying
We are conducting treatment research for youthful individuals who may have problematic alcohol and/or substance use. Participants in this study will receive free substance use treatment, which may cause a decrease in their current substance use, an increase in their level of social support, and an improvement in their overall well-being.
Who Can Participate
Participants of any gender, ages 14-21, who have a history of substance and/or alcohol problems and are not currently in treatment for alcohol and/or substance use. Mental health therapy is fine.
Anyone residing in Connecticut can participate. Remote sessions may be offered on a case-by-case basis. In-person sessions will take place at UConn Health in Farmington, CT.
What You May Be Asked to Do
The 10-week treatment is designed to help build participants’ motivation to stop or reduce their use of substances and/or alcohol and to teach them the skills they will need to be able to do so. This will be accomplished through:
- Two individual therapy sessions
- Eight group therapy sessions covering:
- Substance and alcohol refusal skills
- Skills for coping with urges to use
- Problem-solving skills
- Management of anger and depression
- Communication skills
Compensation
You will be compensated up to $250 with gift cards for participating in research interviews over the course of a year.
