Tyler Kuhns
UConn School of Medicine
A native of Suffield, Connecticut, I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Connecticut and graduated with a B.S. in molecular and cell biology and a minor in chemistry in 2015. Following graduation, I spent two years as a post-baccalaureate fellow at the National Institutes of Health, but soon discovered a passion for serving under-resourced communities during my year of AmeriCorps service working with Seattle’s homeless population in 2017. Following my AmeriCorps service, I worked as a Housing Navigator at The Blaine center, a men’s shelter in Seattle, Washington, where I helped dozens of shelter guests escape homelessness and transition into permanent housing. I was promoted to Program Coordinator before returning to Connecticut for medical school.
After my time working with Seattle’s homeless, I was inspired to commit myself to serving homeless individuals as a physician, and chose to enroll in the Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars Program to learn how to best meet their unique medical and psychiatric needs. Through the UST/AS Program’s leadership training, I hope to prepare myself for a career as both a physician and an advocate for underserved urban communities, by helping create social and health policy that will improve the well-being of this vulnerable population.
