School of Pharmacy
I was born in Da Nang, Vietnam and I moved to the United States when I was four years old. I lived in Minnesota and New Jersey, but my mom and I eventually settled in West Hartford, Connecticut.
My most impactful volunteer experience was when I volunteered at an after-school program for elementary schoolers whose parents could not pick them up due to various circumstances. These students were often members of minority communities. As a volunteer, I helped students with homework and other activities that helped them learn about themselves and the world around them. I’m currently a Smilow pharmacy intern at Yale New Haven Health.
I sought involvement in Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program because I grew up in a community where the town border frequently determined the quality of care a person could receive: one side of town was mostly underserved; the other mostly had access to healthcare. As an Urban Service Scholar, I will learn skills and gain experience in working with underserved populations in order to better serve the communities I work with and of which I am a part. I will also be able to educate other healthcare professionals I work with to increase awareness and reduce barriers to healthcare in underserved communities. Being an Urban Service Scholar will allow me to grow personally and professionally into a pharmacist who can provide the most effective care to all patients, regardless of their background.
