I was raised in New Milford, CT, where I went to school before earning a bachelor of science degree in health sciences from Boston University. I have worked as a certified nurse assistant, resident assistant, and clinical research coordinator, and have volunteered with Peer Health Exchange, Timmy Global Health, and the St. Mark Community Education Program.
Community service, especially involving education and migrant communities, has always been very important to me. As a peer health educator in Boston, I was able to supplement the health curricula of local high schools and provide health lessons about alcohol. Working with students, we were able to have meaningful conversations about the conflicting messages surrounding alcohol use, while also covering relevant health information. I was impressed by students’ insightful comments and learned that it’s important to listen to an individual’s thoughts and concerns when discussing health impacts.
It was my goal as a health educator to empower students with information so they could make informed decisions. Through the UST/AHEC Scholars Program, I hope to continue this work, to become better informed about the challenges urban underserved communities face, and to become a competent physician who can serve the needs of our vulnerable communities.
