Samantha Goldburg
UConn School of Medicine, Class of 2021
I was born and raised in Manhattan before moving to Easton, Connecticut at the age of 12. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience and Behavior from Barnard College in 2016.
I was initially drawn to the Urban Service Track because of my University of Connecticut School of Medicine student interviewer, Brittany Flemming. Brittany described the UST as one of the most important and influential parts of her medical school experience, and the more I learned, the more I wanted to become a part of it. I am excited about the UST because I want to have a direct impact on patients who might not otherwise get the medical care and attention they need. With so many screening techniques and treatments available, I believe everyone should have access to the best medical care regardless of their background or socioeconomic status. I feel strongly about working with underserved populations, particularly in the current political climate in which a new health care bill threatens to cut a significant amount of spending for Medicaid and will likely result in 22 million people losing insurance in the next decade. I plan to shape my career around working with underserved populations, doing what I can to make a difference to those in need. I aim to work towards making our healthcare system more inclusive, and am eager to be part of a community in which everyone feels as passionately as I do about serving diverse and frequently overlooked patient populations. The Urban Service Track will be an exciting first step in achieving this goal.
