Madeleine Roy
UConn School of Nursing
I was born and raised in East Hartford, Connecticut, but spent the majority of my childhood in Glastonbury, Connecticut. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
I have volunteered at Let’s Get Ready, where I tutored high school students from low-income families for the SATs, and at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, where I interacted with the residents and patients, and assisted them while they participated in various social activities. In the future, I plan to volunteer with my local Veterans Affairs clinic to involve myself further with underserved populations.
I knew I wanted to be involved with the Urban Service Track as soon as I heard about it. My goal is to become a psychiatric and mental health nurse for our veteran population. Men and women come home after every deployment in a different, typically worse, mental state from when they left; I want to help relieve some of the mental burden they carry and to help guide them to a mental state in which they can function in our fast-paced society. I believe involvement with the Urban Service Track will not only to deepen my desire to pursue this career, but also provide me with the communicative and medical skills I need to become an advocate for veterans, and to ensure that veterans and other underserved populations receive excellent, patient-centered care.
