Laura Hatchman

UConn School of Medicine, Class of 2019

I was born in Arcadia, California, and raised in Norwalk, Connecticut. I attended the University of Connecticut and graduated summa cum laude from the Honors Program with a Bachelors of Arts in History.

My community service, clinical, and professional experiences have drawn me to the Urban Service Track. I was extremely fortunate to participate with and direct the Honors Alternative Spring Break trip in college, which took sixty students on a week-long service trip to a wide array of underserved areas. My desire to serve those marginalized by the health care system was augmented as a summer student fellow in Hartford Hospital’s Emergency Department, where I saw many underinsured suffer from largely preventable conditions. I sought to contribute more to the Hartford community by leading Penn Medicine’s public health initiate, The Mobile CPR Project, which delivered free bystander CPR lessons to over 6,000 residents.

The Urban Service Track would not only afford me the opportunity to continue to contribute to underserved populations in Hartford, but would also teach me how best to serve the needs of patients I hope to one day have under my care. My ultimate goal is to operate a mobile clinic that will help overcome the obstacle of access to health care that many face. I hope to use the collaborative-based, service-driven, and community-centered core of the Urban Service track to help me become the best primary care physician I can possibly be.
