Kaylin Amado
UConn School of Nursing, Class of 2019
I was born and raised in Montville, Connecticut, and am currently working toward my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing at UConn.
I have volunteered at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford as a member of the ArtReach program, where I helped inpatient and outpatient children with art projects; I have also worked with children as an assistant camp counselor and as a babysitter. I currently work at UConn’s Student Health Center where I perform health care duties such as taking vitals, directing students to help, and running rapid tests. I have been an active member of UConn’s Red Cross Club, and will serve as community service chair for the UConn Student Nurses Association next year.
By taking part in the Urban Service Track, I hope to learn how to practice medicine in a way that will mitigate healthcare inequalities in the United States. As I’ve grown older, I’ve become more and more aware of the discrepancies in access to and quality of healthcare in America. This increasing awareness has driven me to cease being a passive onlooker and to involve myself in overcoming these discrepancies and helping underserved populations. The UST will give me the opportunity to explore, work with, and be affected by the vulnerable populations I hope to work with in the future. I hope especially to make an impact in woman’s health and family planning, two areas of healthcare which are particularly fraught in contemporary America.
