Katherine Semyanko
UConn School of Nursing, Class of 2021
I was born in Hartford, Connecticut and raised in East Granby. I am now pursing my undergraduate bachelor’s degree in Nursing and expect to graduate in 2019.
I have had experience volunteering with elderly patients at a Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mansfield, Connecticut. There, I assisted the staff with activities such as transporting the patients and supervising during arts and crafts. I have also worked with children as a YMCA summer day camp as a counselor. As a counselor, I was responsible for the well-being and entertainment of a group of children ages 5 to 11. I was also accountable for performing first aid on children when needed.
I hope to be involved with the Urban Service Track because I believe this program will provide me valuable experience working with an underserved population lacking access to health care. Through the UST, I can learn how to help those suffering difficult health care issues in poorer urban environments. I have limited experience working and communicating with such populations, and I’m confident the UST will provide me with the communicative skills I currently lack. UST’s commitment to work on interdisciplinary teams of health care professions will also help me develop the team skills I need to be a more effective Nurse in a real-world setting. Through participating in the UST, I believe I can learn to become a leader who advocates for her patients and possesses skills uniquely tailored towards serving those most in need.
