School of Medicine Class of 2016

I was born in Jiangsu Province, China, but was raised in Corvallis, Oregon. As a child, I remember sitting with other families at the crowded outreach center waiting long hours to see the doctor. This was the day the doctor was seeing patients for free, regardless of financial or insurance status. My mother worked hard, but with only a middle school education, we had difficulty making ends meet. She unabashedly took advantage of free medical care opportunities and brought my little brother and me to the free clinic whenever possible. These experiences embarrassed me as a child but now serve as the motivation for my goal of working with disadvantaged communities as a physician. Having experienced the benefits of others willing to serve, I understand the impact of a helping hand. Since then, I’ve graduated from Oregon State University with a BS in Microbiology and have åspent time trying to give back by volunteering with Stone Soup Soup Kitchen, Masonicare Hospice, and in the Bristol Hospital Emergency Department. Because of this I was also eager to be a part of the Urban Service Track. I hope to learn more about how to effectively help communities in need and take advantage of the many opportunities to work with diverse communities. As we work together in interdisciplinary teams, I am excited about the impact we can make and the change we can affect.
