Jaime McCurry
UConn School of Nursing, Class of 2017
I was born in Plainville, CT but was raised primarily in Colchester, CT where I graduated from Bacon Academy in 2013.
I have been volunteering in the public school system in my town since I was in sixth grade as well is participating in volunteer events through my church such as teaching Sunday school classes. This exposed me to a wide variety of experiences and people that have shaped me into who I am today. However, one of the reasons I applied to the Urban Service Track was because, while I have worked and volunteered extensively with my community, I don’t have a great amount of experience working or volunteering in health care.
As a nursing student who plans to focus on diabetes education as a career, I know that there are many people from underserved urban communities who have different needs with regards to diabetes management that I am currently unfamiliar with. By becoming a part of the UST, I will be able to learn how to promote good health and well-being to all people, including those in the underserved communities I hope to serve. Since I have limited experience in this field, I know participating in this program will be an incredible opportunity to help improve my skills and to become the best and most knowledgeable nurse I can be.
