Iqra Qureshi
UConn School of Social Work
I was born in Multan, Pakistan and spent most of my childhood there before moving to Connecticut when I was nine. I earned a Bachelor of Arts in human development and family studies with a minor in women’s gender and sexuality studies from the University of Connecticut in 2019
Through several human development and family studies courses I took while at UConn, I had the opportunity to mentor at an elementary school, where I taught students the importance of community service through service-learning projects. I have since worked as a Sensory Motor Coach at Brain Balance Achievement Center; I worked with children with learning disabilities and processing disorders like ADHD, Asperger’s, autism, and dyslexia. Through specialized activities for each student, I demonstrated behavior management techniques and motivated them to reach their ultimate potential. I have also volunteered at a food and clothing pantry in New Haven, Connecticut.
The Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program came to my attention due to its commitment to service and its focus on improving the quality of life and of healthcare for underserved populations; these foci align closely with my own values and career goals. I am confident the UST/AS Program will help me acquire knowledge and skills that will help me become a better social worker, one who is able to understand and help the underserved communities she works with.
