Heather MacKinnon
UConn School of Dental Medicine
I was born and raised in East Granby, CT. I attended the University of Connecticut for my undergraduate studies, where I obtained a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology, as well as a second bachelor’s degree in Spanish.
My passion to serve began with my first job in an assisted living community, where I fostered meaningful connections with many of the elderly residents and developed my service skills for over five years. From there, I knew that serving others is what truly filled my cup in life. In addition to this job, I have worked closely with the American Red Cross for the past eight years, leading in the organization of blood drives. This role has not only been immensely enjoyable, but has also played a big part in my development as a leader. Lastly, my interest in Spanish language and culture led me to take a study abroad trip to Costa Rica, where I spent a winter living with host families, exploring a new culture, and improving my Spanish-speaking ability. This skill has turned into a huge part of my identity as a person who wants to break down language barriers with patients in healthcare and provide equitable care for all.
I sought involvement in UST because I want to combine my passion for serving others with my skills to make a positive difference in other people’s lives. Dentistry is a field aligned with my passions and dedication to serving others. My future as a dentist is defined by a compassionate and knowledge-driven approach. With these qualities and a commitment to continued growth and adaptation, I envision myself as a dedicated healthcare provider, making a positive difference in the lives of my patients and improving their oral health and overall well-being. Through my membership in UST, I embrace the opportunity to serve others with passion and purpose.
