Gabriel Paul

UConn School of Medicine, Class of 2021

I was born and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C, where I received a BS in biology.

I have spent the majority of my life living and working in an urban environment, so I am familiar with the prevalence in these environments of inequitable distribution of resources relative to socioeconomic status, and the grave consequences of this imbalance on the health of underserved communities. This familiarity has made serving my community and minimizing these disparities an important mission for me. While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I helped the global health organization GlobeMed raise funds for a maternity clinic in Rwanda, and worked through D.C. Reads to tutor 3rd graders from underrepresented communities. Before entering medical school, I conducted clinical COPD research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where the majority of our cohort consisted of elderly people with low incomes. Later, while living in Baltimore, I volunteered for two non-profit organizations, BmoreFit and Thread. As a part of BMoreFit, I raised funds for programs providing health and wellness education and fitness to Baltimore’s City schools. Most recently, as a member of Thread, I mentored an underperforming high school student within a close group of volunteers.

The Urban Service Track is the best opportunity I have both to carry on working with underserved communities and to gain the education and training I need augment my ability to serve these at-risk populations.
