Claire Chang
UConn School of Medicine
My name is Claire Chang and I’m in the UConn SOM class of 2027. I was born in New York City and raised in Mansfield, Connecticut before going to University of North Carolina, where I graduated with degrees in Biology and Music. During college, I had the opportunity to go on a service trip to Washington D.C. to learn about challenges related to poverty, food insecurity, homelessness, and substance use. In continuation of this learning, I worked as a medical scribe in a women’s correctional facility in Massachusetts after graduation. With these experiences, I sought a medical education that would prepare me to take care of anyone, specifically providing the nuanced understanding to care for underserved populations. I was excited to hear about the UST/AS program and the opportunity to learn from/with mentors and peers with similar passions. Through the guidance of this program, I hope to become a physician that understands the specific challenges people face in underserved communities and not only provide better care but also be an advocate for changes in health policy.
