Anna Slupecki
UConn School of Pharmacy, Class of 2017
I live in Union, CT. Union is the smallest town in CT and doesn’t even have its own zip code or high school. So I attended school in nearby Stafford, CT.
I graduated from the University of St. Joseph with a B.S. in chemistry and a minor in biology. I work at The Medicine Shoppe in Rockville, CT. It is a small, independent pharmacy that serves a large population of elderly, disabled, and limited-income patients. My boss is one of my greatest mentors and has shown me that pharmacy is more than a business, it’s a community.
I became actively involved in the student chapters for NCPA (community pharmacy) and ASHP (health-system pharmacy). Both organizations gave me unique, health-care related volunteer experience. During the summer of 2015, I had the pleasure of helping in the AHEC office with pharmacy related inventory for the summer migrant clinics and some preparation for Primary Care Week.
I applied to UST because I was exposed to underserved populations at work and at school. I was introduced to the Deaf community and the Native American community. Both experience unique barrier to care, and it has driven me to strive for a future career in the Commissioned Corps, Indian Health Services, or other organization with a strong history of interprofessionalism and serving the underserved. I believe UST will enable me become a better advocate of interprofessional care teams and help me learn how to develop more meaningful patient relationships.
