Akbar Khan
UConn School of Dental Medicine, Class of 2019
I was born in Karachi, Pakistan and grew up in Queens, NY and Norwich, CT.
I attended the University of Connecticut at Storrs and graduated in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Molecular and Cell Biology.
At UConn, I helped found the Storrs branch of Operation Smile, an organization which helps raise funds to provide surgeries for children born with cleft palates and lips. I have also volunteered at the CT Mission of Mercy where I provided dental care for many people from a number of social and economic backgrounds. There, I observed how difficult it was for my patients to find adequate dental care with limited community and economic resources.
At the end of UST, I hope I will be able to demonstrate to my patients the importance of proper dental care in maintaining good overall health. I believe that my experience with the program will allow me to become a better practicing dentist while helping me educate the medically underserved and empower them to take an active part in their healthcare.
