It’s About Time: Methods for Analyzing Time-to-Event Survival Data

A Biostatistics Short Course Presented by the Center for Quantitative Medicine

An intensive one day experiential short course taught by Miranda Lynch, Ph.D., assistant professor of community medicine and health care with assignments in the Center for Quantitative Medicine and the Biostatistics Center within CICATS. This short course surveys statistical approaches to analyzing time-to-event survival data which is frequently encountered in biomedical studies and clinical trials. Through lectures and hands-on computer exercises, the course will provide researchers with techniques for analyzing and interpreting survival data using survival curves and Kaplan-Meier estimators of survival functions, as well as regression methods (i.e., Cox proportional hazards regression).

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define and characterize time-to-event data and the most common types of censoring;
  2. Compare and interpret survival curves between groups;
  3. Discuss regression methods for associating explanatory predictors to survival outcomes;
  4. Design a research study or project that includes survival endpoints; and
  5. Analyze time-to-event data using R and other statistical packages on the computer.

Miranda L. Lynch, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of community medicine and health care and a faculty member assigned to the Center for Quantitative Medicine and the CICATS Biostatistics Center at UConn Health. Currently, she consults with faculty from throughout UConn Health, conducts her own research, and teaches advanced statistics courses in the graduate program in public health. Dr. Lynch earned her doctorate in statistics at the University of Rochester and joined the UConn Health faculty in 2013. Her research interests are in developing methods for analysis of clustered and longitudinal outcome data, for dealing with missing and/or censored data, and for nonparametric statistical analysis to address questions in high-dimensional/functional data.
