Child Obesity by Age

  • The percent of obese youth decreases with age.
  • In 2016, the first year of the CT SIM implementation, Connecticut youth ages 12 to 17 years old reported significantly lower obesity (9.4%) than the 5 to 11 age group (23.4%).
  • The percentage of obese youth in the older age group remained stable from the pre-SIM implementation years (2014-2015) (.1% increase) while the 5 to 11 age group had an increase of 5.2 percent. In 2018, the obesity decreased by 0.5 percent in the 5 to 11 age group.
  • The coefficient of variation (CV) which was used to assess the reliability of the estimates was greater than 15 percent for the 12-17 age groups in 2017 and, therefore, were not reported. With the caveat that the CV is between 15 and 20 percent, the 2018 data for the 12 to 17 age group is included.
