What to Do First in a Poison Emergency

Inhaled Poison

  • Get the person to fresh air;
  • Avoid breathing fumes while helping;
  • Open any doors and windows;
  • If the victim is not breathing, start artificial respiration and call 911;
  • Call the Connecticut Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 even if an ambulance is on the way.

Poison on the Skin

  • Remove all contaminated clothing;
  • Avoid contaminating your skin while helping;
  • Flood skin with water for 10 minutes;
  • THEN wash skin gently with soap and water, rinse;
  • Call the Connecticut Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Poison in the Eye

  • Flood eyes with lukewarm water. Pour from a large glass held 2 to 3 inches above the eye;
  • Encourage patient to blink while flooding the eyes;
  • Continue flooding eyes for 15 minutes;
  • Call the Connecticut Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.

Swallowed Poison: Medicine

  • Do not give the patient anything to eat or drink;
  • Call the Connecticut Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222.

Swallowed Poison: Household Product

  • Give sips of water to drink immediately unless the patient is unconscious, having convulsions or cannot swallow;
  • Call the Connecticut Poison Control Center for more advice at 1-800-222-1222.
