Electrolyte Disorders

Electrolytes are naturally occurring minerals found within the body such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. When the amount of these minerals in your body is too high or too low, it can have a profound impact on the body’s functions, muscle strength, and heart rhythm. At UConn Health, patients with these disorders are evaluated and treated at the Nephrology Clinic or in the hospital in severe cases. An expert team provides diagnostic evaluation and treatment planning to help manage these disorders.

Symptoms

The symptoms of an electrolyte disorder can include:

  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Muscle cramping, twitching, or weakness
  • Nausea or vomiting

Treatment

An electrolyte disorder is easily diagnosed with bloodwork, and, once your doctor confirms the diagnosis, treatment generally consists of IV fluids, medications, and supplements. In some severe cases, your doctor may recommend hemodialysis.
