Zoha Sarwat
UConn School of Medicine
I was born in Queens, New York and raised in Manchester and South Windsor, Connecticut. I received my Bachelor of Science in physiology and neurobiology with minors in sociology and in psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2020.
While at UConn, I helped start the UConn Health Leaders Program. After reviewing literature and crafting evidence-based questions, the other program coordinators and I created a tool that screens patients for barriers to healthcare; I also vetted health resources that patients could be referred to that would help them overcome these barriers. I have also conducted JUMP (Just Us Moving Program) events in Hartford in collaboration with the Connecticut Convergence Institute for Translation in Regenerative Engineering. These events educated participants on nutrition, healthy lifestyles, and guided movement activities members of at-risk populations could perform.
I sought involvement in the Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program because I believe, as someone once told me, that insight without action is torture. I want to learn more about areas where our healthcare system fails underserved groups in order to ensure that I can provide effective, culturally-sensitive healthcare to members of these groups. With the experiences I will gain through the UST/AS Program, I will ensure that those who are systematically marginalized will have a voice with which they can call for better healthcare and better health outcomes.
