Zahkiyah Days
UConn School of Social Work
Born and raised in Hartford, CT, I am a first-generation college graduate, with a bachelor of arts degree in communication from the University of Connecticut.
I am a member of the Courageous Faith Movement Empowerment Network, focusing on providing resources and support to single mothers and children in the Greater Hartford area. Regarding volunteer experience, I have fed the less fortunate, assisted with back-to-school fairs and Christmas toy drives, made dog treats for a local pet shelter, facilitated a financial literacy workshop for high school students, and participated in various other volunteer events. Additionally, I work at a nonprofit community mental health organization that specializes in providing behavioral healthcare to individuals dealing with mental illness, addiction, and trauma
I sought involvement in the UST/AS Program to strengthen my skills by immersing myself in a learning experience that prepares health professionals for the challenges of healthcare in underserved communities. From this experience, I expect to learn how to address the concerns of patients from varying cultural and economic backgrounds. I also expect to learn how to work efficiently under pressure in urban/rural healthcare settings. My exposure from the program will enable me to continue giving back to my community by providing education and advocacy, further bridging the gap between underserved populations and healthcare providers. I believe it is crucial to be a well-rounded and culturally competent healthcare practitioner, and the UST/AS Program provides students with a great foundation for a successful career in primary care.
