Tran Long Doan
School of Nursing
I was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I came to UConn School of Nursing as a transfer student in 2021. During my first two years in the United States, I attended Manchester Community College in Connecticut fulfilling my prerequisites prior to applying to nursing school.
I started going to school in the United States at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. During this time, I volunteered at the American Red Cross taking temperatures and screening donors for possible Covid exposure. I also work part-time as a pharmacy technician. In this role, in addition to dispensing medications safely and assisting customers with their prescriptions, I have taken additional training to become an immunizer in order to help pharmacists out with pharmacy workflow by administering Covid and other vaccines.
I want to join the Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program to improve the quality of care among underserved, vulnerable populations. From my working experience, I have realized that the majority of people from underserved population experience social and health disparities that prevent them from achieving optimal health. I would like to both provide excellent care and to address the social negative determinants of health. I believe the UST/AS program will equip me with the essential skills to better assist underrepresented populations and to better understand the unique challenges that these populations are facing.
