UConn School of Medicine, Class of 2021

I was born in Seoul, South Korea and have lived in Glastonbury, Connecticut since the age of six. I graduated summa cum laude from Boston College with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry.

After graduating from college, I spent a year working as a medical scribe in two different primary care facilities in Boston, Massachusetts, one of which was a local community health center. As I followed medical providers on their visits to patients to help them with the documentation, I learned about the socio-cultural diversity of urban communities and the differences in their healthcare access. I saw many of the patients struggling against social, economic, and cultural barriers that frustrated their efforts to attend to their health. But I also witnessed many positive health results obtained through the compassion, patience, and education provided by excellent health professionals. This interpersonal, communicative approach to medicine inspired me to join the American Red Cross, to volunteer with the Boston Food Pantry distributing foods to those in need, and to apply to the Urban Service Track program.

The Urban Service Track will help me develop into a well-rounded, competent physician. The interprofessional experiences, direct exposure to the urban environment, and medical training I will gain as a UST scholar will prepare me to more fully understand the community I will come to serve and live in. This understanding will help me to be both a better physician and a better health advocate, one who can work alongside other community members to effect positive, community-scale change.
