Stephanie Wang
UConn School of Medicine
Stephanie was born and raised in rural southern China and moved to Boston in her early twenties. She holds a B.A. in English and a master of law degree from Xiangtan University, and an M.A. in conflict resolution from UMass Boston. She also completed the premedical program at Harvard Extension School.
Before medical school, Stephanie spent more than a decade as a Mandarin medical interpreter and patient navigator at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She supported patients with limited English proficiency (LEP) by facilitating communication, guiding them through complex care systems, and contributing to quality improvement initiatives that promote language-concordant and culturally competent care. She also developed tools and strategies to strengthen communication among patients, providers, and interpreters during both in-person and remote clinical encounters.
Stephanie was drawn to the Urban Service Track because of the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with fellow UST scholars and mentors committed to advancing health equity. She is particularly interested in how emerging technologies and evolving healthcare policies affect vulnerable populations, such as the LEP community, and how equitable clinical workflows can be designed and implemented to reduce disparities. Her long-term vision is to help build a healthcare system where vulnerable patients are not viewed as “exceptions” or “burdens,” but as full partners in their care—seen, heard, and empowered throughout their healing journeys.
