Sahal Bin Nasim
UConn School of Medicine
I was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh and moved to Queens, New York when I was eight years old. After some time in the city, my family moved to Cheshire, Connecticut where I was raised. I graduated in December 2021 with my bachelors in molecular and cell biology from the University of Connecticut.
Throughout my undergraduate studies, I explored a multitude of community engagement opportunities, including volunteering at a food bank and hospice care facility. However, one of the most influential experiences was leading various in-person and online events at a local senior center. The program left a positive impact in the elderly community and served as my inspiration to collaborate with other senior centers to expand their virtual activity sessions during the pandemic. I also worked as a patient care technician in a hospital emergency department.
The Urban Service Track is a unique opportunity that provides exposure to urban underserved populations and the knowledge to tackle community healthcare disparities. I look forward to collaborating with other medical professionals to advocate for proper healthcare services for vulnerable communities. I strongly believe the UST program will help me embody the supportive role of physicians and address both the medical and nonmedical factors in a patient’s care. Through this program, I look forward to exploring different facets of our healthcare system including healthcare policy, public health, and the impact of social determinants of health.
