Madeline Walker
UConn School of Medicine
I was born and raised in Brookfield, Connecticut. I graduated in 2020 from the University of Scranton with a Bachelor of Science in neuroscience and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, along with a minor in biochemistry.
I have a wealth of volunteer experience. At the Edward Leahy Jr. Clinic for the Uninsured in Scranton, Pennsylvania, I volunteered as a scribe, and helped the Clinic provide free healthcare to residents of Lackawanna County unable to afford it. I have also volunteered at Park Avenue Elementary School in Danbury, Connecticut, where I assisted ESL kindergarten students with reading and writing comprehension. Outside the US, I volunteered with Partners in Development at a community center in San Bernadino, Guatemala, where I helped construct the foundations of a new home, organized children’s activities, and volunteered in a health clinic.
I want to be involved in Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program in order to become an advocate for the children of urban underserved populations who frequently lack healthcare because of economic or other obstacles. I also want to be part of a new generation of healthcare providers that views each patient holistically, and so seeks to collaborate with providers from other disciplines in order to provide each patient with the best possible care. I hope the knowledge and experience I gain through UST/AS Program will help me become the sort of patient-centered, culturally-sensitive healthcare provider who I believe can truly make a difference.
