Kaila Lujambio Rios
UConn School of Dental Medicine
I was born in Orlando, FL, and moved to Wallingford, CT, where I grew up. I graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor of science degree in allied health sciences and a minor in molecular and cell biology.
I am passionate about oral healthcare and public health initiatives to close current healthcare gaps and inequalities. I founded and led two service initiatives, A Butterfly of Love and Crafting Care, supporting these causes. I have worked as a dental assistant, conducted dental-related research at UConn Health, and been certified as an emergency medical responder. After learning about the Connecticut River Valley Farmworker Health Program (CRVFHP) in 2019, I have since continued collaborating with its programs serving farmworkers in our region. I have also volunteered in dental and medical clinics, such as the Connecticut Mission of Mercy (CTMOM) Free Dental Clinic, MEDLIFE medical clinics, and the St. Francis Mission among the Lakota reservation dental mission.
My aspirations are to become a dental doctor and obtain a master’s degree in public health, working thoroughly in my profession helping patients and gaining experiences in different fields. I will then gradually become involved in leadership roles from where I can more directly influence public health initiatives related to oral healthcare in New England. Through the UST/AS Program, I hope to work on programs that provide health services for underserved communities.
Finally, each day I will continue to thrive to make one more person smile—either by making people more confident in their smiles or simply by brightening their days—as one’s smile is truly the prettiest thing a person can wear.
