Jazmin Capel
UConn School of Social Work
I was born in Manhattan, New York and moved to Waterbury, Connecticut at age seven, where I spent most of my childhood. I attended Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, Connecticut and obtained my bachelor’s degree in communication. I am currently enrolled at University of Connecticut where I am pursuing my master’s degree in social work.
I served as a Service to Improve Community Health (STICH) AmeriCorps member for ten months. STICH placed me in a federally-qualified health center in order to help the underserved population in my community by educating individuals on the importance of good health as well as how to use their health insurance. Through AmeriCorps, I have had many volunteer opportunities including stop hunger walks for food pantries and Habitat for Humanity, among others.
I applied to the Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars Program because I believe the program will grant me the experience and skills I need to let me succeed in social work. My previous volunteer experience led me to realize how greatly I enjoyed giving back to my community and helping individuals become happy, integrated members of society. Through the UST/AS Program, I will learn how to care for individuals’ mental and physical health, helping them meet all their health needs and striving to ensure that they live long, contented lives.
