Gabrielle Caron
School of Medicine
I was born and raised in Enfield, Connecticut. I graduated with honors from the University of Connecticut in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in molecular and cell biology, and minor in psychology.
Throughout my undergraduate career, I was a research assistant at Connecticut Children’s in the Emergency Department. I enrolled patients in studies on a variety of topics including nutrition education and access, WIC, Gun Safety, and obesity. I did this for course credit and volunteered during the summer breaks. I also volunteered as an EMT at Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association for just over a year.
In my personal life, I have witnessed how social determinants of health impact patients through nutrition, exercise, access to health care, and more. This constant wear from externalized, negative determinants ultimately lowers the quality of life and health of vulnerable populations. As a female minority physician, I want to work to break this cycle at a patient level and at larger policy level, to create equal access to health care regardless of social status. The Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program will provide me with the opportunities, leadership, and skills to accomplish these goals. Participating in the UST/AS Program will enrich my medical education by directing it towards health disparities in urban communities and patients. This will allow me to develop my cultural competence, interprofessional skills, and awareness of the needs of underserved communities.
