Gabriela Davila
UConn School of Nursing
I was born in Norwalk, Connecticut and spent the majority of my childhood there and in Bridgeport, Connecticut. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with a minor in Spanish at UConn.
I have interned at Norwalk Hospital, where I worked closely with the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Department. I have also worked at the Norwalk Hospital Cancer Center raising money and collecting items for the center’s patients who struggled to afford the costs of their treatment. This coming fall, I will serve as one of the community service chairs for the Student Nurses Association.
I have wanted to be a part of the Urban Service Track since I first heard about it. Having grown up among people from a variety cultural backgrounds, I have seen firsthand the barriers many face trying to access healthcare. I have seen different beliefs, finances, lack of education, and language all act as barriers in healthcare settings; such surmountable barriers keep people from receiving the care that they deserve. Through the UST, I want to acquire a better understanding of underserved communities, and learn how I can use this knowledge to give patients from different backgrounds care tailored to their needs. Furthermore, I am looking forward to collaborating with health professionals from other disciplines and learning how we can work as one health care team to ensure that communities receive the best possible all-around care.
