Farah Themistocle
UConn School of Dental Medicine
I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and attended college at Fairfield University. I graduated in 2015 with a major in Biology and a minor in Studio Arts.
I have previously been involved with the Southwestern Area Health Education Council (AHEC) in Connecticut. There, I took part in meetings with program leaders and classes focused on health care and social determinants of health, and took part in a brief Oral Health Service Learning Project. I have also completed a UConn Summer Fellowship program focused on health care research, and attended the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), where I was taught the importance of effective socio-economic treatment planning. Professionally, I worked as a Dental Assistant at Dr. Dental, where I helped dentists during their patients’ monthly check-ups.
I want to join the Urban Service Track because I want to remain connected to my community while in school. The UST provides the opportunity for health care professionals-in-training to better themselves through work with other like-minded people towards unified goal: to care for those who are medically underserved. It is very easy, while studying, to become disconnected from the world outside academia; the UST will help me remain grounded and tethered to my service-oriented ideals.
