Evelyn Luner
UConn School of Medicine
I grew up in Waterford, CT, and have a B.S. in Neuroscience with a minor in Public Health.
As an undergraduate, I participated in a public health service program to Honduras, where I and other students worked closely with members of a rural community to build and install sinks, showers, and cement floors. I have also volunteered in a free clinic that helped uninsured and undocumented patients get the immediate care they required, provided them access to preventative programs, and assisted them in applying for insurance. Most recently, I worked as a clinical research coordinator in the Neurology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital.
While I enjoyed studying and working in neuroscience, I plan to enter a primary care specialty upon finishing medical school, most likely in family medicine or OB/GYN. Whichever specialty I decide on, I intend to focus primarily on women’s health. I hope to combine my medical practice with work in health care policy and advocacy in order to change existing policies and to create new ones for providing health care to women from all socioeconomic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. The Urban Service Track will allow me to begin working toward this goal while pursuing my education, and to gain valuable experience working among different patient populations as well as with students from a variety of health care disciplines.
