Emma Kryzanski
UConn School of Medicine
I was born in Connecticut and grew up in Burlington, Connecticut, just around the corner from UConn Health. After completing high school at Lewis S. Mills High School, I matriculated at UConn. There, I earned a Bachelor of Science in physiology and neurobiology and a minor in Spanish.
In addition to my time spent in the classroom, I have devoted significant time to service and research. Through Collegiate Health Service Corp, I worked with fellow UConn students to provide health lessons, activities, and resources to medically underserved groups. Through HuskyTHON, I helped lead a Dance Marathon movement on campus to fundraise and advocate for Connecticut Children’s. For Connecticut Children’s Weight Management Clinic, I investigated demographic and socioeconomic factors associated with patients’ post-referral attendance at the clinic.
I applied for the Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars (UST/AS) Program because I believe that the education and experiences it provides will best prepare me to be an effective medical professional. The urban underserved population deserves not only to have reliable access to healthcare, but also practitioners who understand their norms and mores, and who consider how those impact their health. “Having access” does not just mean receiving care, but receiving comprehensive, patient-centered care. I aspire to provide my patients with this standard of care, and I know that the experience and knowledge I gain through the UST/AS Program will allow me to do so.
