I was born in Waterbury, Connecticut to immigrant parents proud of their Portuguese culture and determined to teach me about our heritage and the value of hard work and dedication. I attended public schools in Waterbury where I volunteered for several local programs to give back to my community. I loved to work with and help people from various backgrounds, facing different challenges, and with different standards of accomplishment. I always felt honored when, during a community event I was volunteering at, someone would share their story with me about how they came to this country or who they are.
I attended UCONN for my Bachelor of Science, and continued my volunteer work during my studies. We may witness on the television or internet the health disparities that exist in this country, but the media’s capacity to represent fails to do justice to what is observable firsthand. I was disheartened to see how individuals and families neglect their health because they cannot afford it or because they are scared that seeking help would jeopardize their residency in the United States. This is why I want to join the Urban Service Track/AHEC Scholars program: I want to obviate the health disparities plaguing this country and to help those who struggle. I want to ensure that treatment is equal and fair, and that it respects the particular characteristics of its patients.
