School of Medicine, Class of 2016

I was raised in Niantic, Conn. and received my B.S. in Psychology from UConn. Like many others, I decided to pursue a career in medicine in order to help others. In college, I tutored 5th and 6th graders identified as having “behavior problems.”  I also ran a tutoring program at Windham High School that helped students prepare for standardized tests, specifically the CAPT. Most recently I worked for Child and Family Agency, a nonprofit in southeastern Connecticut, providing case management and behavioral and mental health support to a mostly urban population along with a licensed social worker. I believe the most fundamental way to help another is to ensure their good health. Unfortunately, many times in our society, access to healthcare is looked upon as a privilege, rather than a right.  I am very passionate about providing the opportunity to access equal healthcare for all people, regardless of their cultural, socioeconomic, religious and any other differences. Working with UST will give me an opportunity to learn more about working with the underserved, and present me with opportunities to work with urban populations almost immediately.  I am also interested in learning more about healthcare policy and how it affects various populations.
