NATIONAL PRIMARY CARE CELEBRATION 2022 - Primary Care: A Team Sport!
CT AHEC in collaboration with academic and community partners, has a rich history of acknowledging the contributions of primary and preventive care. For many years, that acknowledgment included a dedicated week of programs and service.
This year, 2022, we invite health and public health professionals, students, and community partners, to join us for an exciting 6-week observation of Primary Care which features 7 virtual sessions focusing on a variety of topics and presenters. The schedule is designed with busy students and professionals in mind. Sessions are offered weekly on Thursday 12-1PM or 6:30-7:30PM. There is no cost to attend and all are welcome.
Our speakers represent a variety of local, state, and national organizations -- they are accomplished providers, advocates, and partners.
In addition to the 7 sessions, we will feature mini-podcasts of trainees and providers discussing their "origins" and affiliations with primary care.
Join us for this exciting celebration and discussion about how today's Primary Care is truly a team sport which includes diverse and skilled healthcare teams, specialists, and advocates.

Incentives to Gain Interest in Primary Care

Panel members will address current issues, and strategies being implemented at the local level, in larger organizations, and at the state level. Participant will be able to:
- Describe some of the barriers to recruitment of new primary care providers
- Identify some strategies to enhance primary care recruitment and retention
- Describe some programs that are designed to build the primary care workforce
- Increase knowledge for financial incentives (loan forgiveness, payment incentives).

Legislative Changes Impacting Lead Poisoning Interventions for Pediatric Populations
Speaker: Jennifer Haile, MD CCMC
According to the CDC, even low levels of lead in blood have been shown to negatively affect a child’s intelligence, ability to pay attention, and academic achievement. Childhood lead poisoning is a public health problem. The objectives of this presentation are:
- Review sources of lead poisoning
- Discuss the effects of lead on children
- Analyze current trends of lead poisoning in the state
- Review the CDC and state screening guidelines/mandates
- Provide resources for primary care physicians to support families.

- Describe means of optimizing communication between primary care and specialists
- To list or name attributes that result in successful connections regardless of specialty
- Name ways they can respond to growing crises in their offices (behavioral health) and how to do the best handoff when not in the same building.

Breaking Bad Habits – Fracture Prevention in Osteoporosis

Collaboration between primary care providers, specialists, pharmacists, nurses, and other essential team members is essential to providing optimal care to patients. Though Osteoporosis is likely well-known among primary care clinicians, it is often underreported and undertreated. Participants will be able to:
- Understand the management of osteoporotic fractures and how it truly “takes a village” to provide appropriate management
- Discuss the importance of fragility fracture prevention
- Explain screening parameters for osteoporosis
- Described management of primary and secondary fracture prevention.

Highlighting Wins in Primary Care

Primary Care is about the long game – how to keep patients healthy and happy throughout their life span. This panel will discuss how to highlight the “wins” with patient care in primary care, changing the mindset in young learners, realizing small positive gains (i.e. small decrease in bmi) is a big win for that patient. Participants will be able to:
- Support clinicians in dealing with opportunities to increase job fulfillment (skill development to keep them moving forward to recognize wins)
- Help residents (new professionals) to recognize those wins, and to take pride in helping/supporting the small wins for patients
- Reminder of why they came into primary care and optimizing job fulfillment
- Highlight what “success” and “effectiveness” mean in Primary Care.
