C1ql3 has a beautiful gene expression pattern. Any neuron expressing C1ql3 is marked by expression of an mVenus reporter, such that the soma, axons, and dendrites fill with mVenus. Visible in this sagittal section from an adult mouse brain is the mVenus localization pattern, counter stained with DAPI to label nuclei. Prominent is the expression of C1ql3 in the granule neurons of the dentate gyrus (part of the hippocampus, a brain structure important for learning and memory). The mossy fibers are the axons that emanate from the dentate gyrus into the stratum lucidum region of the hippocampus. Also prominent is the C1ql3 expression in the basolateral amygdala, an important brain structure for behaviors involving emotions. The expression of C1ql3 in the amygdala is the subject of our 2016 publication in Neuron.
