Mammograms
Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer related death for women in Connecticut (CDC). Regular mammograms, an X-ray picture of the breast, are an effective test to find breast cancer early, sometimes up to three years before it can be felt.
The percentage of women ages 50 to 74 in Connecticut who had a mammogram to screen for breast cancer did not vary substantially by insurance type from 2015 to 2017 (the most recent year data are available).
In 2015, the year prior to the CT SIM implementation, 61.4% of Medicare patients and 62.6% of privately insured patients had a mammogram.
In the first two years (2016-2017) of the CT SIM implementation, the percent of Medicare patients who had a mammogram increased slightly to 62.3% in 2016 and to 64.8% in 2017. The percentage of patients with private insurance saw a very slight decrease in 2016 to 62.1%, and an increase to 64.0% in 2017.
