Understanding How Life Experiences Affect the Diabetic Body

Diabetes is a common disease, particularly in women and minorities, that causes suffering for patients as well as their loved ones. Our goal is to develop treatments to improve the health and quality of life of people with diabetes. Our research aims to explain how mental experiences such as stress, depression and mistreatment affect health. Our focus is on women and minorities for two primary reasons:

  • They are most likely to develop long-term complications from type 2 diabetes, especially with blood vessels and the heart.
  • Their needs historically have been neglected in important research.
