Who can apply for CME
The UConn CME Office is the accredited ACCME provider for UConn Health and functions as a decentralized CME program that operates directly through the UConn Health Departments/Divisions to provide accredited continuing medical education. Each UConn Health Departments/Divisions is responsible for the development and implementation of their own educational activity who will work in partnership with the CME Office through an application process to obtained accredited CME credits for their educational activity.
UConn Health Departments/Divisions offer educational activities that are tailored to complement the specific target audience needs and schedule through the following educational activities such as conferences, workshops; live virtual courses; enduring materials; and grand rounds. In addition, developed content is based on evidence and changes according to ongoing needs assessments by UConn Health Department/Divisions needs for internal quality improvement initiatives and community physician needs.
UConn Health Departments/Divisions may also elect to collaborate and partner with any non-UConn Health (external) agency or government/community partner to offer a "jointly provided" accredited CME activity. However, any external agency or government/community partner (who is not UConn Health) seeking accredited CME for their educational event from the UConn CME office must work through one of the UConn Health Department/Division who would want to partner with them in offering their educational event. The UConn Health Department/Division would be responsible for the joint providership; would ensure that the educational content would meet CME standards and be the ones applying for CME through the application process with their joint provider. It is at the discretion of the UConn Health Department/Division if they choose to work with a non-UConn Health partner to form a joint providership for CME, not with the UConn CME office. The UConn CME Office may consider any appropriate requests from UConn affiliated personnel to jointly provide CME activities with community and other partners that are not defined as an “ineligible company” by ACCME. The OCCME prohibits any joint providerships with ineligible companies.
In other words, the UConn CME Office does not offer any jointly provided accredited CME to any non-UConn Health (external) agencies or government/community partners who are not already working in conjunction with a UConn Health Department/Division for the development and implementation of the educational event.
Identifying a UConn Health Department/Division
If you are a non-UConn Health (external) agency or government/community partner who is seeking to "partner" with UConn Health to offer your educational activity as potential accredited CME, we suggest reviewing the UConn Health website under Patient Services where it provides a comprehensive listing of services that will then link you to specific UConn Health Department/Division/Center with contact information as well. Please visit https://health.uconn.edu/patient-services for helpful guidance.
Direct Providership versus Joint Providership
Direct Providership applies to activities hosted by a department/division of UConn Health OR hosted by a UConn Health department/division and another ACCME-accredited institution. Whereas Joint Providership applies to activities hosted by a non-ACCME accredited organization outside of UConn Health and with a department/division of UConn Health. On behalf of the School of Medicine, the OCCME may consider appropriate requests from UConn affiliated personnel to jointly provide CME activities with community and other partners that are not defined as an “ineligible company” by ACCME. The OCCME prohibits any joint providerships with ineligible companies.
CME Application Timeline
In order to receive consideration, the Office of Community and Continuing Medical Education require the potential program planners to begin both the educational development of the CME and the CME application process at a minimum of 16 weeks prior to the anticipated date of the educational activity, which is usually done in tandem of each other. Ideally, the development/planning of the CME education and the application of the potential CME activity should be considered in the very early or initial planning phases, many times this could be 6 months or more prior to your anticipated activity date.
