State-of-the-Art Personalized Treatment for Brain and Spine Tumors
Receiving a brain or spine tumor diagnosis can be scary, but at UConn Health, our doctors and researchers have found a highly effective way to treat primary or metastatic brain and spine cancer and tumors based on the genetic mutations of the tumor.
In collaboration with the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine (JAX), UConn Health is one of only a handful of health care centers in the world that routinely performs clinical methylation profiling for diagnosing and guiding the treatment of brain and spine tumors. In addition to this, we also run one of the most extensive gene panels, a 550-gene panel analysis, to identify the brain or spine tumor’s unique molecular structure. This results in identifying the precise abnormalities of the tumor, which helps guide the personalized treatment plan.
The UConn Health-JAX collaboration performs genomic sequencing of all brain and spine tumors, and the institution’s multidisciplinary brain and spine tumor board discusses the results at its biweekly meeting. JAX also has a rich database for clinical trials that assists in guiding personalized treatment for our patients based on the molecular makeup of their tumor. Through our collaboration, we are one of only a handful of places in the world that can offer clinical methylation to guide decision-making. Due to the expertise in our program, we treat the largest number of complex brain and spine tumors in the state of CT.
