Eileen is an emergency department nurse by training. Her research focuses on the prevention of antibiotic resistance and infections, and antibiotic misuse and strategies to minimize antibiotic misuse among pediatric and adult populations. Using qualitative methods, Eileen has identified opportunities to engage nurses and parents in the outpatient and inpatient setting to improve the evaluation of reported penicillin allergies with the goal of improving antibiotic use and patient outcomes. Currently, Eileen is testing the feasibility of a multifaceted implementation strategy to improve nurses’ comprehensive evaluation of reported penicillin allergies among perioperative patients to minimize patient harms. Her work has been funded by the National Institute of Nursing Research, the CCI Research Foundation, the APIC Heroes Implementation Award, and the Robert E. Leet and Clara Guthrie Patterson Trust.
