UConn Health Hopes to Keep Caring for Our Cigna Patients

UConn Health’s contracts with Cigna health plans expire May 1, 2024.

We continue to negotiate in good faith to reach an agreement with Cigna for both UConn John Dempsey Hospital and UConn Medical Group providers that will allow us to operate more efficiently, reduce costs, and continue providing high-quality patient care. However, to date we have not reached an agreement. If a new agreement is not reached by May 1, 2024, beginning May 1, 2024, UConn Health will be considered out-of-network for patients with Cigna medical insurance. This change would not impact Cigna dental or Cigna behavioral health plans.

What does this mean?

If UConn Health goes out-of-network with Cigna, when Cigna patients wish to use UConn John Dempsey Hospital services or UConn Medical Group providers, they will no longer pay lower in-network costs and may have to pay higher out-of-network costs up to 100% of cost out-of-pocket.

What is the latest update?

UConn Health continues to negotiate in good faith with Cigna. We hope we can reach a fair resolution with Cigna soon. Our ultimate goal is to ensure our hospital, the state’s only public academic medical center, and our providers can continue their high-quality, excellent care of Cigna patients at in-network, affordable rates.
