UConn Health Hopes to Keep Caring for Our Anthem Patients

UConn Health’s contracts with Anthem health plans expire July 31, 2022.

We continue to negotiate with Anthem to renew the managed care contracts for both UConn John Dempsey Hospital and UConn Medical Group providers. However, to date we have not reached an agreement. If a new contract agreement is not reached by July 31, 2022, beginning October 1, 2022, UConn Health’s Anthem plan patients, along with their UConn Health providers, will be deemed out-of-network by Anthem.

What does this mean?

When Anthem member patients wish to use UConn John Dempsey Hospital services or UConn Medical Group providers they will no longer pay lower in-network costs, will have to payer higher out-of-network costs or even 100% of costs out-of-pocket. In addition, UConn Health doctors will lose hospital admitting privileges for their Anthem patients at their very own UConn John Dempsey Hospital. Important Note: All state employees are offered Anthem health benefits. Patients who are state employees with Anthem benefits will remain in-network at UConn Health as Anthem is the state’s only state employee health plan provider.

What is the latest update?

UConn Health is still negotiating in good faith with Anthem. We hope we can reach a fair contract resolution with Anthem soon. Our ultimate goal is to ensure, our hospital, the state’s only public academic medical center, and our providers can continue their high-quality, excellent care of Anthem patients at in-network, affordable rates.
