What’s Next for You and Your Baby

After your baby is born at UConn John Dempsey Hospital, our personalized services will help you and your family enjoy and embrace your newest arrival.

Your baby may stay with you in your private room, which is equipped with a private bathroom and boasts serene views of the scenic Farmington Valley.  Just steps away, you can relax and celebrate with family and friends in a comfortable family lounge.

Expert Nursing Care Around the Clock

Our nursing staff provides unparalleled technical expertise coupled with warm, attentive care. There whenever you need them, our nurses provide you with information, education, and support during your stay – and after as well. Once you return home, you can call the Family Birthing Center at 860-679-3310 any time, day or night, with a concern or question. A trained registered nurse is always ready to help.

Breastfeeding Support

Certified Lactation Consultants, experts on breastfeeding, are available to you during your stay, as well as after you go home. Our nurses and lactation consultants will discuss the entire breastfeeding process and explain what happens to you and your baby physiologically and emotionally. We carefully cover breastfeeding techniques, maternal nutrition, and infant weight gain, as well as anything else you want to know.

Infant Care/Parent Care

Before you leave the Family Birthing Center, you will receive full instruction and demonstrations on how to bathe, feed, and diaper your infant. You will learn coping strategies for the ups and downs of the first weeks of life with a newborn, as well as practical information regarding safety and child-proofing your home.

Instructional videos, in English and Spanish, on breastfeeding and infant care are also available in each room.
