He or she will review your medical history and surgical instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Follow your surgeon\u2019s instructions about taking routine medications.<\/li>\n<li>Make arrangements for a responsible person over the age of 18 to accompany you to your surgery and stay with you for 24 hours after surgery.<\/li>\n<li>You will be called with your arrival time after 2 p.m. on the last business day prior to your surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-1346-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-1346-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1346-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><h3>Day of Surgery<\/h3>\n<p>Follow these simple rules to make the day of your surgery safer and more comfortable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not eat or drink after midnight (unless otherwise directed). This includes mints, lozenges or gum.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a list of medications with dosage and frequency information.<\/li>\n<li>Bathe or shower on the day of surgery.<\/li>\n<li>Brush your teeth, but do not swallow any liquid.<\/li>\n<li>Do not use makeup, hair spray, lotions, or oils.<\/li>\n<li>Remove all nail polish and body piercings.<\/li>\n<li>Wear loose, comfortable clothing and shoes.<\/li>\n<li>Leave all jewelry and other valuables at home.<\/li>\n<li>Bring all sensory\/assistive devices including glasses, hearing aids and CPAP machines.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to remove contact lenses.<\/li>\n<li>If indicated, you must supply guardianship paperwork and\/or power of attorney documents. The surgery will be cancelled if these legal documents are not made available.<\/li>\n<li>The anesthesia team will be available to discuss anesthesia options and answer any questions.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a photo I.D.<\/li>\n<li>Do not bring children with you on the day of your surgery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-1346-2-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1346-2-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_media_video panel-first-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-1346-2-1-0\" ><div style=\"width:100%;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-1346-1\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/youtube\" src=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TjN04B7J-dU?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/TjN04B7J-dU\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/TjN04B7J-dU<\/a><\/video><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-1346-2-1-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-1346-2-1-1\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p>If you're having surgery at UConn John Dempsey Hospital and will be staying overnight, watch this video for a patient perspective on what you can expect during your stay with us.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-1346-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-1346-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1346-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><h3>Discharge<\/h3>\n<p>If you are having day surgery:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Whether you are driving in a car, taking a cab, or using other public transportation, a responsible person over the age of 18 must accompany you and stay with you for 24 hours.<\/li>\n<li>Follow your doctor\u2019s instructions regarding rest, activity, diet, medications, bathing, and returning to work.<\/li>\n<li>You will be discharged when your doctor determines it is safe for you to leave the facility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are being admitted to the hospital:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contact the hospital floor for the visitor\u2019s policy including child visitor restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>You should anticipate leaving at 11 a.m. on the day your doctor discharges you from the hospital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-1346-4\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-1346-4-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1346-4-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><h3>Insurance and Billing<\/h3>\n<p>Your surgery and anesthesia charges will be billed to your insurance company. You are responsible to pay any balance as per your individual insurance policy.<\/p>\n<p>If your surgery is not covered by insurance, you are required to pay on or before the day of surgery. An actual bill indicating a total charge will be sent after surgery. Unpaid balances must be paid within 30 days.
