The program focuses on the recruitment and mentorship of underrepresented students at all stages of the academic pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>The M1 Award recipients, selected through a peer review process, include:<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8988-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8988-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_widget_sp_image widget_sp_image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Jennifer Cavallari Sc.D., CIH\" class=\"attachment-160x200\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cicats.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/840\/2017\/06\/Cavallari-Jennifer83.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-8988-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/facultydirectory.uchc.edu\/profile?profileId=Cavallari-Jennifer\"><strong>Jennifer Cavallari, Sc.D., CIH<\/strong><\/a><\/span> Dr. Cavallari is an assistant professor in the Department of Community Medicine and Healthcare and the Division of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at UConn Health. Dr. Cavallari is an epidemiologist and Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). She received her doctorate in Environmental Health from Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) in 2007 where she also completed a post-doctoral fellowship.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8988-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8988-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_widget_sp_image widget_sp_image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"240\" alt=\"Dr. Nicholas Leadbeater, M1 Mentor\" class=\"attachment-160x240\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cicats.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/840\/2017\/06\/Leadbeater-photo.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-8988-2-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-2-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/chemistry.uconn.edu\/person\/nicholas-leadbeater\/\"><strong>Nicholas Leadbeater, Ph.D.<\/strong><\/a><\/span> Dr. Leadbeater is an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry at the UConn Storrs campus. A native of the United Kingdom, he received his Bachelor\u2019s degree from the University of Nottingham and his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8988-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8988-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_widget_sp_image widget_sp_image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"5\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"251\" alt=\"Dr. Bill Zempsky, M1 Mentor\" class=\"attachment-160x251\" style=\"max-width: 100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/cicats.uconn.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/840\/2017\/07\/WZ.jpg\" \/><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-8988-3-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-3-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"http:\/\/chip.uconn.edu\/person\/william-zempsky-md-mph\/\"><strong>William Zempsky, M.D., M.P.H.<\/strong><\/a><\/span> Dr. Zempsky is a professor of Pediatrics at the UConn School of Medicine and is the Head of the Division of Pain and Palliative Medicine at Connecticut Children\u2019s Medical Center. Dr. Zempsky received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University.\u00a0 He graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and completed a pediatric residency on the Harriet Lane Service at Johns Hopkins Hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8988-4\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8988-4-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8988-4-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_black-studio-tinymce widget_black_studio_tinymce panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div class=\"textwidget\"><p>\u201cI am pleased to welcome this next cohort of M1 Mentors, comprised of yet another talented group of faculty representing UConn and UConn Health,\u201d said Dr. Cato Laurencin, chief executive officer, CICATS. \u201cMentorship is a fundamental component of student success, and I look forward to the impact from our mentors across CICATS and the UConn community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The inaugural cohort of the M1 Mentorship Award Program included Dr. Anne Delany and Dr. Syam Nukavarapu, UConn Health faculty, and Dr. Elaine Choung-Hee Lee, a faculty member from UConn Storrs.<\/p>\n<p>Each M1 Award recipient utilizes program funds to guide and lead the\u00a0development of their mentees towards becoming academic scientists. The activities focus on promoting the development of these students starting in\u00a0high school through to junior faculty.
